Summarize with AI

A shopper types "linen shirt" and your store shows 200 products, most of them not shirts. A search app takes over those results. Sledge runs search, filters and offers on one flat plan, from $29.99 a month. Paid plans start at $19 on Searchanise for a small catalog and at $14 on Rapid Search for modest traffic, and Shopify's Search & Discovery is free.

At a glance

What is the best search app for Shopify?

The best Shopify search app depends on the job, so find yours below.

  • You want search, filters and offers on one flat monthly plan. Sledge, from $29.99 a month after a 14-day free trial.
  • Your catalog stays under 7,500 products and your budget is small. Searchanise, $19 to $39 a month.
  • Your traffic is modest and you want the lowest fixed monthly plan. Rapid Search, free to 2,000 monthly sessions, then from $14 a month.
  • Someone on your team merchandises big collections every week. Fast Simon, Top Pro at $299.99 a month for merchandising rules and A/B tests.
  • Shoppers ask questions and you want something to answer them. Doofinder, Pro at $186 a month or higher, with the assistant priced on request.
  • A developer is on hand and you want search no settings page can build. Algolia, pay as you go.

How we picked

How did we pick these seven search apps?

Each of these ecommerce site search tools is on the Shopify App Store today, works on a live store and shows a price anyone can read, or a free allowance. Prices are as of November 2026, so check the app before you buy.

The problem

Why does Shopify search show products nobody asked for?

Shopify's search matches by meaning on its own, so results can include products that are only loosely related. An ecommerce search engine is the software that reads what a shopper types and picks the products to show. Shopify's is built in, needs no setup and forgives typos.

Shopify says no setting controls how broadly its search matches, and you can't change how results are ordered. Shopify has also retired synonyms in its free Search & Discovery app, though the app's listing still names them. It says search now matches common synonyms on its own.

Your catalog says "athletic shoes". Your shopper types "sneakers". You can reword your product data, lift chosen products with Shopify's free app, or install a search app, which takes over your store's results. Baymard's 2026 benchmark says 56% of sites fail to adequately support shoppers' search needs. For what changed at Shopify, read how to take back control of semantic search.

1 · Sledge

Sledge: can search also sell your bundles?

The Sledge Product Filter & Search listing on the Shopify App Store, with its summary and a row of screenshots.

Shoppers find the product and leave without the bundle you built for it, because it sits on a product page they never open. Sledge is a Shopify search and filter app that can show your offers in the same results, on one flat monthly plan.

Fixed bundles, Buy X Get Y and volume discounts can each show on the search results page and in the instant search drop-down, and a merchandising rule sets where they sit. For every search, or only the keywords you pick, you can also pin, boost, push down or hide products, or add one from another collection, on the drop-down and the results page. Filters run on collections and search results, with color and image swatches, and can merge Navy and Dark Blue into one option.

On a paid plan you choose how search matches under "Search Mode": by keyword, by meaning, or both. Keyword is the default. AI-Conversational Search, which you switch on yourself, turns a typed sentence into filters, 2,000 times a month on Pro and up to 45,000 on Ultimate. Past that, search still answers what was typed and stops reading sentences, at no extra charge.

On a paid plan you pick how Sledge search matches.

A shopper who types a full SKU finds the product. In "Field Priority" you choose which product details search reads and in what order, and tags, descriptions and size or color names stay off until you switch them on. Typos are forgiven in product titles and brand names by default. You keep your own synonyms with no cap, and AI ones come with any paid plan. A search that finds nothing can still show search tips, suggested terms and your most popular products.

Pro costs $29.99 a month, Scale $89.99, Accelerate $199 and Ultimate $399, side by side on Sledge pricing. The bill doesn't count searches, sessions or orders. Plans step up on two ceilings instead. Pro covers 10,000 products and Scale 200,000, so at 12,000 you start on Scale, and the top two plans have no limit. Each plan also covers a Monthly Revenue Boost, the revenue Sledge counts as added in a month, from $8,000 on Pro to $300,000 on Ultimate. Past that ceiling, the month's price stays the same, while Growth Intelligence, Sledge's advisor, pauses new suggestions and conversational search stops reading sentences until the month resets.

The 14-day free trial runs Sledge on your whole catalog, with one bundle of each type, and without AI search, AI synonyms, personalization or Growth Intelligence. AI search switches on when you pick a plan, and billing starts when the 14 days end. Try Sledge free for 14 days.

Sledge has no free plan on a live store, no image search and no chat assistant for shoppers. AI search needs a paid plan, search matches a full SKU but not part of one, and Pro stops at 10,000 products.

Best for: search, filters and offers on one flat plan.

2 · Searchanise

Searchanise: what do you get for $19?

The Searchanise listing on the Shopify App Store, with its app summary and a row of screenshots.

You have a few thousand products and little to spend on search. Searchanise bills by the size of your catalog, not by how many people search.

Basic costs $19 a month up to 1,500 products and adds voice search. Essential costs $39 up to 7,500 and adds banners. Its own pricing page prints plans up to $349 for 300,000, with no search or session limit stated. A product counts if it is active, on your online store and not excluded by tag.

Filters, merchandising, analytics and AI personalization are all on the free plan, with unlimited searches and Searchanise branding. Paid plans start with a 14-day free trial.

The catch: the free plan only covers development stores and stores under 25 products, and the bill climbs with your catalog. Already on it and leaving? Four Searchanise alternatives cover that move.

Best for: a small to mid catalog that wants a low, predictable bill.

3 · Rapid Search

Rapid Search: is the lowest fixed monthly plan enough?

The Rapid Search listing on the Shopify App Store, showing its summary and screenshots.

Your search is a tiny icon, and shoppers walk past it. Rapid Search swaps it for a search bar that stays on screen, free to 2,000 monthly sessions, then from $14 a month.

Every plan carries every feature, including SKU search, typo and synonym tolerance, and rules to pin, boost, push down or hide products. Rapid Search holds the Built for Shopify badge on its listing.

The free plan covers 5,000 products and shows Rapid Search branding. Paid plans drop the branding and cover 100,000 products: $14 for 5,000 monthly sessions, $27 for 12,000 and $39 for 25,000, after a 14-day free trial. A session is one visit to your site. As of November 2026, a limited BFCM offer takes 30% off your first 3 months if you subscribe before the trial ends, so the $14 plan reads $10 for those 3 months.

The $14 plan is enough until you pass 5,000 monthly sessions. Past that, Rapid Search asks you to upgrade, and if you don't, shoppers get Shopify's built-in search again until the limit resets. Its plans list search and filters, not bundles or discounts.

Best for: the lowest fixed monthly plan at modest traffic.

4 · Fast Simon

Fast Simon: when is merchandising worth the price?

The Fast Simon AI Search & Filters listing on the Shopify App Store, with its summary and a row of screenshots.

You re-sort collections by hand and still guess which order sells. Fast Simon ranks search and collections toward the goals you set.

Its listing adds conversational search that reads questions, typos, SKUs and images, and AI shopping agents that apply your promotions and rules.

Free covers 100 sessions a month, with instant search, typo correction, product filters and a daily catalog update. Starter, at $39.99 for 2,000 sessions, adds synonyms and custom filters. Essential, at $114.99 for 10,000, adds optimized collection filters and real-time catalog updates. Only Top Pro, at $299.99 for 30,000, lists visual collection merchandising and custom ranking controls. Paying yearly saves 17%.

Plan cards first list SKU search on Essential, and merchandising rules and A/B tests on Top Pro. That price suits you if someone works your collections every week. Already on Fast Simon and leaving? See what seven Fast Simon alternatives charge as your traffic grows.

Best for: stores with someone merchandising every week.

5 · Doofinder

Doofinder: do you need an assistant on your store?

Doofinder's listing on the Shopify App Store, with its summary and product screenshots.

Shoppers type questions, and a search bar answers with a list. Doofinder adds an AI assistant that answers back, on its Pro plan at $186 a month or higher, and the assistant itself sits behind a "Request Pricing" button.

Basic costs $61 a month, with AI guided search, voice search, synonyms, product recommendations and a quiz maker. Pro, at $186, adds search suggestions and dynamic recommendations. Advanced, at $436, adds personalized results and visual search. Enterprise is by quote. There is no free plan, only a 15-day free trial. If the quiz maker is all you need, compare seven product recommendation quiz apps.

Requests are the number to read. Doofinder counts one each time it answers your store, and results start at the third keystroke by default, so a single typed word can count more than once. Updating your catalog uses them too, 10 for every 1,000 items. Each Doofinder tool, such as search or quizzes, gets 10,000 requests a month on Basic, 150,000 on Pro and 400,000 on Advanced.

Best for: stores whose shoppers type questions, not product names.

6 · Algolia

Algolia: is it worth it without a developer?

The Algolia AI Search & Discovery listing on the Shopify App Store, with its summary and a row of screenshots.

Your store needs search no settings page can build, and you have a developer ready. Algolia gives them the parts and bills by use.

It can run without one, because setup needs no code. You install the app, connect an Algolia account, work on a copy of your theme and publish it, and collection pages are set up in the theme editor. Deeper changes to the look take a developer. Every plan reads "Self-service support only", so guaranteed responses, setup help and training go through Sales.

Free covers 10,000 searches a month and 50,000 stored items. Grow charges $0.50 per 1,000 searches past 10,000, and $0.40 per 1,000 stored items past 100,000. Grow Plus charges $1.75 past the same 10,000 and adds AI synonyms and ranking. Both bill monthly with no contract, and Algolia's NeuralSearch AI sits on the top plan, sold on a yearly contract.

Each size or color can count as one stored item, so check your count, or switch to one stored item per product. Algolia may also bill you outside your Shopify invoice. Already on Algolia and leaving? See what seven Algolia alternatives cost and what a switch takes.

Best for: stores with a developer or an agency.

7 · Shopify Search & Discovery

Shopify Search & Discovery: is the free app enough?

The Shopify Search & Discovery listing on the Shopify App Store, with its summary and screenshots.

You sell a small catalog and don't want another bill. Shopify's free app adds filters and lets you lift chosen products for chosen searches.

For a small catalog, that is often enough. You also get recommendations and search reports for $0.

You run out of filters at 25, the cap for a whole store. A collection over 5,000 products shows no filters at all. On search results, filters and their counts read only the first 1,000 results, and a filter shows at most 100 values. A boost takes at most 10 search terms and lifts only a product available for sale.

To set it up, read how to use the Shopify Search & Discovery app.

Best for: a small catalog testing whether better search pays.

Left out

Where are Boost, Klevu and the enterprise engines?

Boost's App Store listing now reads "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store." Check it before you plan around the app. If you run Boost today, start with seven Boost alternatives.

Klevu is now Athos Commerce. Its listing prints no plan prices, and every plan on the Athos Commerce pricing page says "Request Pricing", so it can't join a table of bills. Read Sledge vs Klevu or five Klevu alternatives.

Klevu's listing on the Shopify App Store, with a pricing card that says the app is free to install and is now Athos Commerce, and no plan prices.
Klevu's listing now prints no plan prices.

Bloomreach, Coveo and Constructor show up on the general lists of ecommerce search engines. Bloomreach starts at $60K a year for smaller brands, Coveo prices on request, and Constructor's Shopify listing has 0 reviews.

Jobs by plan

Which plan do you need for image, SKU or voice search?

A feature on a listing can sit on a plan far above the price that drew you in. This is where each job starts, from plan cards, pricing pages and Shopify Help.

Job Where it starts
An assistant for shoppers Doofinder Pro, $186 or higher, priced on request. Fast Simon lists shopping agents with no plan named.
Image or visual search Fast Simon Top Pro, $299.99, as "AI Multimodal Search". Doofinder Advanced, $436.
SKU search Shopify's own search, a full SKU or its first 3 to 15 characters. Rapid Search, every plan. Sledge, a full SKU on every plan. Fast Simon Essential, $114.99.
Synonyms Rapid Search, every plan. Sledge Pro, $29.99, your own and AI ones. Fast Simon Starter, $39.99. Doofinder Basic, $61. Algolia Grow for manual ones, Grow Plus for AI ones.
Voice search Searchanise Basic, $19. Doofinder Basic, $61.
Personalization Searchanise Free. Sledge Pro, $29.99. Algolia Grow Plus. Doofinder Advanced, $436.

An app missing from a row isn't ruled out: its plan cards don't place that job, though its listing may still name it, so ask the app's support team. Sledge has no assistant, no image search and no voice search of its own.

Test it first

How do you test a search app before it goes live?

Pull your test searches from the "Searches with no results" and "Searches with no clicks" reports in Search & Discovery. Then run six checks.

  1. Copy your theme and try the app there.
  2. Type ten real searches: a typo, a full SKU, a color, a question, one that finds nothing.
  3. Test the drop-down and the results page separately.
  4. Check your collection pages keep your theme's look.
  5. Time a collection page opening before and after you switch the app on.
  6. Ask what the app leaves behind when you remove it.

For the searches that find nothing, read what a zero-result search is and how to fix one.

Once search is live

What should you fix first once search is live?

Start with the searches that find nothing, because those shoppers told you what they wanted. Most search apps list them. Sledge's Analytics lists them with your top search terms.

On any paid plan, Growth Intelligence reads your searches and lists fixes, such as one for searches that find nothing. One total, "Est. potential", shows the sales all its open fixes could add each month, not only search fixes. A fix opens the right page in Sledge, already filled in, and nothing changes until you review and save.

What is the best ecommerce search engine for Shopify?

It depends on the job. Sledge fits a store that wants search, filters and offers on one flat plan from $29.99 a month. Searchanise fits a small catalog from $19, Rapid Search modest traffic from $14, and Shopify's free Search & Discovery a store with no budget.

Does Shopify have AI search?

Yes. Shopify's built-in search matches related words and ideas on its own, and you don't need to turn it on. Shopify says no setting controls how broadly it matches, and you can't change how results are ordered. A search app takes over those results, and most let you set the order, some only on a higher plan.

How do I add AI search to my Shopify store?

Install a search app, switch it on in your theme editor, and preview it before it goes live. In Sledge, open Search, then AI-Smart Search, and pick a Search Mode: keyword, semantic (by meaning) or hybrid (both). Semantic and hybrid need a paid plan, from $29.99 a month.

Do I need a search app if I have Search & Discovery?

Not always. Shopify's free app gives you 25 filters, product boosts and search reports, which can be enough for a small catalog. You need a search app to choose how search matches or to order results beyond a few boosts. Shopify has retired synonyms in that app, so plan around that if you rely on them.

Which ecommerce search tools include AI?

All seven here do, in different ways. Shopify's matches by meaning on its own, and on a paid plan Sledge lets you match by keyword, meaning or both. Searchanise lists AI personalization, Rapid Search an AI search bar, Doofinder an assistant for shoppers, Fast Simon shopping agents, and Algolia keeps NeuralSearch for its top plan, on a yearly contract.

Put one dollar total on your store's open fixes

On any paid plan, Growth Intelligence adds all its open fixes into one “Est. potential” total: the sales they could add each month.
