What is a zero-result search?

A zero-result search is a search that returns nothing. The shopper typed what they wanted, the store answered with an empty page, and the most common next step is leaving. Zero-result searches usually come from vocabulary gaps, typos, or sold-out products, and they happen out of sight unless a store tracks them.

Why do zero-result searches cost sales?

Say your store sells fleece pullovers and a shopper searches "hoodie". The word appears nowhere in your catalog, so she gets an empty page and backs out to Google. At 100 searches a day with 8 coming up empty, that's roughly 240 dead ends a month, each a shopper who told you what she wanted and got nothing back. Shoppers who search are your readiest buyers, which makes the empty results page the most expensive blank screen on your store.

On Shopify stores

The usual causes on a Shopify store: vocabulary mismatch (you say "fleece", shoppers say "hoodie"), typos, and products that sold out or were never stocked. Finding them takes search analytics that record every term shoppers type, including the ones that returned nothing. Without that record, the dead ends stay invisible. Synonyms map the shopper's word to yours, redirects send a dead query somewhere useful, and suggested products turn the empty page into a second chance.
