What is merchandising?

Merchandising is deciding which products shoppers see first. In a physical store that means the window and the eye-level shelf. In an online store it means the order of every product grid: collections, search results, recommendations. You curate by hand, like pinning a hero product to the top, or by rule, like sinking anything out of stock.

How does merchandising work online?

Row one of a collection gets the clicks. Say your Bestsellers collection sorts by newest, so a $12 keychain sits in position one while the $89 jacket with 200 reviews waits on row four. Pin the jacket first and demote anything under five units of stock, and you have changed nothing about the products, only the order. The order is what shoppers actually see.

Curating by hand works for one hero collection. Rules scale it: push new arrivals up while they're fresh, sink slow movers, hide what can't ship today.

On Shopify stores

Shopify collections sort manually or by a fixed rule like best selling or newest. Manual sorting is drag and drop, one collection at a time, and it goes stale the day new products land. Search is harder: results come back in relevance order, and reordering them takes more than drag and drop. So stores that take merchandising seriously add an app that applies the same rules across collections and search at once.

Merchandising with Sledge

Sledge merchandising lets you pin, boost, demote, or hide products by hand or by rule across collections, search results, and instant search. Rules read what your catalog already knows: product type, vendor, tag, price, inventory, new arrivals. Boost by hand. Or by rule.
