What is a post-purchase upsell?

A post-purchase upsell is an offer shown after checkout, on the order confirmation or thank-you page. The shopper has already paid, so the original sale is safe no matter what. Accepting simply adds one more item to the order they just placed, while the buying mood is still warm.

How does a post-purchase upsell work?

Say a shopper just paid $64 for a chef's knife. The thank-you page offers an $18 sharpener at 20% off, $14.40, for this order only. One buyer in ten takes it. Across 300 orders a month, that is 30 sharpeners and $432 added after the sale was already won.

The timing does the work. A shopper who just bought from you trusts you more than at any other moment in the visit.

On Shopify stores

On a Shopify store, the offer lives on the order confirmation page, the one page every buyer sees. Checkout already happened, so nothing shown there can lose the sale. That makes it the lowest-risk spot in the store to make an offer. Keep the offer close to what was just bought; a random product reads as noise.
