What is a collection filter?
A collection filter is a set of controls on a collection page that narrows the product grid by attributes like size, color, price, or brand. Shoppers tick the options they care about, and the grid updates to show only matching products. Because the filter is scoped to one collection, it offers only values that actually exist there.
How do collection filters work?
Say your Jackets collection holds 180 products. A shopper needs a rain shell, size large, under $150. Three ticks: Waterproof, L, $100 to $150. The grid drops from 180 cards to 9, and every one of the 9 is a real candidate. Without the filter, that shopper is paging through 180 jackets and probably leaving around card 40.
Filters earn their keep on big collections. Under a couple dozen products, scrolling is faster.
How is a collection filter different from a search filter?
A collection filter narrows a fixed, curated set: the collection. Its options come from that set, so a sneaker collection never shows a Sleeve Length filter. A search filter narrows whatever a query returns, so its options are recalculated for every search. Same controls, different starting point. Collection filters refine a page you built; search filters refine an answer the shopper asked for.
On Shopify stores
Collections are the main browsing path on a Shopify store, which makes collection filtering the workhorse. Most themes ship basic filtering: plain text checkboxes drawn from variant options and tags. Stores add a filter app for more: swatches instead of color names, price sliders, and control over which filters appear on which collection.
