What is instant search?
Instant search shows results the moment a shopper starts typing: products, collections, and pages appear in an overlay above the page, updating with every keystroke. No enter key, no page load. The shopper sees matches after two or three letters and can jump straight to a product.
How does instant search work?
A shopper taps the search icon and types "swe". By the third letter, the overlay shows six sweaters, the Knitwear collection, and a sizing-guide article. She taps the cardigan at $58 and lands on its product page about four seconds after she started typing. The full-page route asks more: finish the word, press enter, wait for a results page, scan it, click. Five steps, one page load, several chances to drift away. Instant search cuts the path to its two useful parts: type, tap.
On Shopify stores
On a Shopify store, instant search opens from the theme's search icon and draws its overlay over whatever page the shopper is on, so it feels quick on phones, where patience runs shortest. The difference between basic and good is coverage and forgiveness: a strong overlay searches products, collections, pages, and articles together, and forgives typos. "Snekers" should still find sneakers, because shoppers type fast on small screens.
