What is a metafield?

A metafield is a custom data field you attach to a Shopify product to store information the default fields do not cover, like fabric, fit, ABV, or battery life. Each metafield holds one piece of structured data per product. A store can show it on the product page or turn it into a filter shoppers use to narrow a collection.

How does a metafield work?

Say you sell 200 shirts and add a "fabric" metafield to each: cotton, linen, or wool. On its own, that data just sits on the product. But turn it into a filter and a shopper who wants linen cuts 200 shirts to 18 in one click.

The value is in the structure. Free text in a description cannot be filtered. A metafield with clean values can, so every attribute you record becomes a way for shoppers to find what they want faster.

On Shopify stores

On a Shopify store, metafields hold the attributes that matter to your shoppers but do not fit Shopify's standard fields. The payoff comes when they drive the storefront: a "fit" metafield becomes a fit filter. The data you already entered to stay organized does double duty as the controls shoppers use to discover products.

Metafields with Sledge

Sledge Filters turn your product metafields into filters shoppers actually use, so a "fabric" field becomes a one-click way to cut a collection to the right products. And built-in Growth Intelligence reads your store's own browse patterns, names the next move worth making, estimates its monthly impact in dollars, then measures the result against real sales.
