How to set up back-in-stock alerts on Shopify

Shopify has no native "notify me" form, so a sold-out page lets ready buyers leave with no way to call them back. Add a notify-me form to the product page, collect the emails in one list you can read, then email those subscribers automatically the moment stock lands. Setup and the plan it needs, below.

A shopper found the exact thing they wanted, right size, right color, wallet out. The button says "Out of stock," greyed, and the page offers them nothing else. So they leave, and you never learn they were there. The easiest sale of your week, and the page handed it the door.

Why does a sold-out product page lose the sale silently?

Because Shopify's default sold-out page is a dead end: a greyed button, no email field, no way for the shopper to say "tell me when it's back."

That shopper is not a browser. They navigated to a specific product, in their size, and tried to add it to the cart. It is the highest-intent moment in your store, and the page can only tell them no.

The miss is invisible, which is what makes it expensive. No error, no ticket, nothing logged to tell you a sale was even attempted. You restock later and that shopper is long gone, buying the same product somewhere that asked for their email.

What does a back-in-stock alert actually do?

It captures the demand before you have the inventory. A "notify me" form takes the shopper's email while the item is sold out, and an alert emails them the moment it returns, with a link straight back to the product. The shopper who would have vanished is now on a list, and one click brings them back while the intent is still warm.

The demand is captured instead of lost. Every notify-me signup is a buyer who asked to be called back, and the email goes out automatically the moment the product returns; nothing waits on you to send it.

How do you add a "notify me" form to your Shopify product page?

You add a back-in-stock app, because Shopify has no native form for it. Shopify tracks inventory and shows "sold out," but capturing the waiting shopper is left to an app. So the choice is which app, and how much of your storefront it reaches.

Sledge Back in Stock injects the "notify me" field where the add-to-cart button used to be, and places it on four surfaces, not one: the product page, the product card in collections so a shopper subscribes without opening the product, search results, and instant search. The form is geo-gated, so you collect emails only in regions you actually ship to. It installs without touching your theme code and renders on any theme. One plan note: Back in Stock is included on the Accelerate plan and up.

Who signed up, and what can you do with the list?

Every notify-me submission lands in one list, and that list is the part most stores underuse. It is the only place your catalog tells you what shoppers wanted and could not have.

Sledge keeps two views of it. Submissions is one row per signup: the product, the date requested, the last notification sent, and a Resend button for the times you want to send it again yourself. Subscribed products is the one that changes decisions. It counts the subscribers on each product and puts your available quantity right beside that number. Forty people waiting against two units in stock is a reorder that argues for itself, and two waiting against two is not.

The list moves in and out as well: export it, import one when you arrive from another app, and add a subscriber by hand when somebody asks you over email or at the counter. The restock email then sends itself the moment the product is back in stock, to everyone waiting on it.

How do you decide which products to add alerts to?

Start with the sold-out items shoppers keep trying to buy. Any product that goes out of stock often, or sold through fast last time, earns a notify-me form first.

Read it by intent, not catalog size. A clearance item you are happy to let run out does not need an alert. A bestseller in a size that always sells first, a seasonal product that returns every year: those are where the alert pays for itself, because the demand is real and repeatable. Turn the form on for the products you will restock regardless, and the alert turns a known reorder into buyers who come back the day it lands.

The back-in-stock alert checklist

  • Sold-out product pages show a "notify me" field, not just a greyed button.
  • The form appears on the product page, the product card, search results, and instant search.
  • Every signup lands in one list you can read, count per product, export, import, and add to by hand.
  • The form is geo-gated to regions you actually ship to.
  • The restock email sends itself when the product is back in stock.
  • Alerts are on for bestsellers and seasonal SKUs you reorder, not one-off clearance.

Questions, answered

Does Shopify have a native back-in-stock notification?

No. Shopify shows sold out but has no built-in notify-me form, so capturing the waiting shopper needs an app. Sledge Back in Stock adds the notify-me form to the product page, the product card, search results, and instant search, then emails subscribers automatically on restock.

When does the back-in-stock email get sent?

The moment the product is back in stock. Sledge emails everyone waiting on that product at once, with nothing for you to schedule and no campaign to build. If you ever need to send one again, the submissions list carries a Resend button on each row, alongside the date that subscriber was last notified.

Can I see who signed up for a restock alert?

Yes. Sledge lists every submission with its product, the date requested, and the last notification sent, plus a Resend button. A second tab counts the subscribers per product beside your available quantity, so the waiting demand reads as a reorder decision rather than a mailing list.

Which plan includes Back in Stock?

Back in Stock is included on the Sledge Accelerate plan and up. See pricing for the full plan breakdown so you can match the feature to the tier before you install.
