What is a back in stock alert?
A back in stock alert is a notification a shopper requests on a sold-out product: tell me when this is available again. When inventory returns, the store emails her automatically. Instead of ending at a dead button, the sold-out page collects a promise to come back, with a name attached.
How do restock alerts recover lost sales?
A sold-out product still gets traffic: ads run, search ranks it, links circulate. Without an alert, every one of those visits ends nowhere. Say a bestselling sandal sells out and 80 shoppers tap Notify me while it's gone. The restock email goes out the morning inventory lands. If even a quarter buy, that is 20 orders recovered from a page that was selling nothing.
The demand does not vanish while you restock: every signup is a buyer who asked to be called back the day it lands.
On Shopify stores
Shopify tracks inventory, but a sold-out product page just shows a disabled button; nobody gets told when stock returns. Stores add an app that swaps the dead button for a notify-me form, watches inventory, and sends the email the moment the variant is back. A popular restock can sell through again in days, so the alert has to go out when stock lands, not in the next newsletter.
