What is a volume discount?
A volume discount is a price cut that grows with quantity. Buy more, pay less, either per unit or off the whole order. Stores use volume discounts to win bigger orders from the same shopper, trading a slice of margin for a larger basket and faster-moving stock.
How does a volume discount work?
Say you sell phone cases at $20. The rule: 10% off three or more, 20% off six or more. A shopper buying for the family takes three cases for $54 instead of $60. A small reseller takes six for $96 instead of $120. You gave up $24 on that second order, and won $96 you might never have seen at full price.
Volume discount vs quantity breaks: what's the difference?
The two overlap, and plenty of stores use the names interchangeably. The nuance: quantity breaks are per-product price tiers shown on the product page, buy four candles and each candle costs less. A volume discount is the broader family, and often applies at the order level: a percent off once the cart hits a quantity or a spend, whatever's in it.
On Shopify stores
Shopify's built-in discounts can apply a quantity rule at checkout. The product page is the quiet part: shoppers won't buy six unless something tells them six costs less. So you show product-level tiers as a small table under the price, and order-level ones as a cart message: "Add 2 more to save 10%." The discount must apply in the cart by itself, no code to type. Set the first threshold one step above the typical order, so it stretches orders instead of rewarding what shoppers already buy.
