As of November 2026, UPS vs FedEx vs USPS comes down to the parcel. USPS takes up to 70 lb. UPS and FedEx take up to 150 lb. Each sells a faster service with a money-back guarantee, and none lists one for ground. Cost depends on weight, size and zone, so test your parcel in Shopify's rate calculator.

Your pick list holds a 9-ounce tee, a 14-pound boot box and a gift the shopper wants by Friday. Most posts you read end on "it depends". Here is what it depends on, from the carriers' own pages and Shopify's Help Center, read on November 6, 2026.

Which carrier fits which parcel?

Over 70 lb the choice is UPS or FedEx, because USPS stops at 70 lb. For a guaranteed delivery date, you need one of the faster services.

Which services still carry a delivery guarantee?

As of November 2026, only the faster services do: overnight and two-day A.M. services at UPS and FedEx, Priority Mail Express at USPS.

UPS lists four domestic services: Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air, Next Day Air Saver and 2nd Day Air A.M. FedEx lists its overnight services and 2Day A.M. USPS guarantees Priority Mail Express, with exceptions.

UPS says its guarantee is suspended on every other service, and FedEx says the same until further notice. USPS lists no guarantee for Ground Advantage.

Ground takes 1 to 5 business days at UPS and FedEx. In its October 22 holiday release, USPS gives Ground Advantage 2 to 5 business days, Priority Mail 2 to 3 and Priority Mail Express 1 to 3.

Over the holidays, UPS says a limited number of Ground and Standard packages need more time from November 16 to January 8, 2027. FedEx pushes its A.M. delivery commitments of noon or earlier 90 minutes later from November 23 to January 4, 2027. UPS's and FedEx's own pages each claim an edge over the other, and neither claim is independent.

What will UPS, FedEx or USPS shipping cost for your parcel?

Which carrier costs less depends on the parcel's weight, size and zone, and Shopify's label discounts vary by carrier, package, weight, destination and plan.

A parcel has three possible price sheets. The carrier's published price is the first. The second is your own carrier account, which can bring commercial rates, and USPS says Click-N-Ship gets them for Ground Advantage. Shopify's discounted label rates are the third, and its Help Center prints no percentage for them.

The box can cost more than the weight. On Ground Advantage, USPS adds a charge for length past 22 inches and bills by box size, called dimensional weight, above 1 cubic foot. UPS adds an Additional Handling charge when the longest side passes 48 inches, the second longest passes 30, or the parcel weighs over 50 lb, and its page on avoiding extra fees lists the rest. FedEx adds charges for Additional Handling and Oversize parcels too.

The surest test is three of your own parcels: your lightest bestseller, a typical order and your heaviest box. The steps follow Shopify's Help Center page on its rate calculator, with the labels as the admin printed them on November 6, 2026.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Shipping and delivery.
  2. On the Shipping labels row (where you buy discounted labels), click Calculate rates.
  3. In the Shipping rate calculator window, fill in Shipping from, Shipping to, Package (the box size) and Total weight.
  4. Click Calculate discounted rates.
The lower part of Shopify's rate calculator window in the admin: a Shipping to menu with a country flag and an empty search box, a Package menu set to Sample box at 22 × 13.7 × 4.2 cm and 0 kg, a Total weight of 1 with the unit lb, a greyed Calculate discounted rates button, and a grey panel on the right reading Calculate how much you'll save when you buy labels at discounted rates from Shopify.
Shopify's rate calculator as it opens, cropped to Shipping to, Package and Total weight: nothing is typed in the destination box, so the panel on the right has no rates yet.

What changes in carrier prices this winter?

Dated changes are already published: a USPS holiday increase now, peak charges per package, and 5.9% rises from UPS in December and FedEx in January.

Read on UPS's rates page, FedEx's peak charge and rate change pages and USPS's price-change page, November 6, 2026.

USPS's page headed Temporary Price Change for 2026 Holiday Shipping Season: text saying the temporary rates were approved on September 9, 2026 and run from October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027, a table with 6% retail and 6% commercial for Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Priority Mail Express and a Parcel Select row, and two columns of dollar increases by zone and weight beside it.
USPS's own page, read November 6, 2026: temporary prices from October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027, 6% retail and commercial for Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Priority Mail Express.

Both 5.9% figures are averages across each carrier's base rates, so a single parcel can rise more or less, and UPS says the effect on your shipping costs will vary. Say 400 home deliveries ship at the top peak rate. UPS's $0.75 adds $300 on top of the labels, and FedEx's $0.80 adds $320.

UPS's peak charges, which Shopify's Help Center calls demand surcharges, show on your labels and in Shopify's rate calculator, not in your checkout rates. You absorb them unless you add a handling fee to the rate. For why a label can cost more than checkout, see Shopify shipping rates.

How much cover comes with the label?

Most labels carry $100 of cover, so an order worth more needs cover you buy, or up to $200 that some plans include.

On labels bought in Shopify, USPS covers up to $100 on Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express. UPS covers $100, or $50 on Ground Saver, and FedEx up to $100. A $300 order on a label with $100 of cover is short by $200.

Shopify sells shipping insurance up to $5,000 for a label shipped from the US, at $0.89 per $100 on a domestic label. On Grow, Advanced and Plus with Shopify Payments, up to $200 of cover comes included on each eligible label, and Shopify says it doesn't stack with the carrier's. On most services a signature on delivery costs extra, and the prices change often, so read the price when you buy the label. Our guide on whether shipping protection is worth it weighs paying for cover.

Which carrier for returns?

All three can be a return label in Shopify, for US-to-US returns, and you pay only when the carrier scans the parcel.

Shopify's Help Center lists return labels for every domestic UPS service except Ground Saver, for FedEx with a phone number at both addresses, and for USPS Priority Mail and Ground Advantage. A label you never use costs nothing. It expires six months after purchase at UPS, 90 days at FedEx and one year at USPS. Ecommerce returns covers who pays for the label.

Do you have to pick just one carrier?

No: Shopify lets you choose a carrier on each label, and checkout rates can come from more than one.

The checkout rates built into every plan come from USPS, DHL and UPS for a US location. Showing FedEx rates, or rates from your own carrier accounts, takes Advanced or Plus, or Grow with a monthly fee or yearly billing. Shopify's Help Center lists FedEx labels for US parcels, with drop-off only. It also names comparing rates on each shipment as a reason to use more than one carrier. Shipping abroad adds customs and duties, which Shopify international shipping covers.

What does a bigger order do to a per-parcel bill?

A carrier bills by the parcel, not by the dollar, so a higher average order value gives the same bill more sale to sit on. Say a peak charge of $0.80: it is 2% of a $40 order and under 1% of a $90 one.

Sledge does not ship parcels, buy labels, track or insure them, or set a rate. In its Cart Drawer, the Progress goal section (a bar that shows how close a cart is to a reward) has a Free shipping button, so shoppers see how far the cart is from your free shipping line. Once the cart reaches it, the discount you set comes off the shipping rate. The Signals tab flags Almost free shipping when orders keep landing just under that line, and the reward is on every Sledge plan. Our free shipping bar guide and free shipping threshold entry cover where to set the line.

UPS vs FedEx vs USPS: which is better?

None is better for every parcel. USPS takes parcels up to 70 lb, and UPS and FedEx take up to 150 lb. Each sells a faster service with a money-back guarantee. The rest turns on weight, size, speed and zone, so price your own parcels in Shopify's rate calculator before you set a default.

Is USPS cheaper than UPS and FedEx?

It depends on the parcel. All three price by weight and zone, and all three add charges for large or odd-shaped parcels. Shopify's Help Center says its label discounts vary by carrier, package, weight, destination and plan. Run two or three of your usual parcels through Calculate rates and compare the results.

Does Shopify offer FedEx?

Shopify's Help Center lists FedEx labels for US parcels, with drop-off only. Showing FedEx rates at checkout needs your own FedEx account, on Advanced or Plus, or on Grow with a monthly fee or yearly billing. The rates built into every plan cover USPS, DHL and UPS for a US location.

Which UPS, FedEx and USPS services carry a delivery guarantee?

As of November 2026, UPS lists Next Day Air, Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air Saver and 2nd Day Air A.M. FedEx lists its overnight services and 2Day A.M. USPS lists Priority Mail Express, with exceptions. UPS and FedEx say the guarantee stays suspended on their Ground services, and USPS lists none for Ground Advantage.

Which carrier delivers to a PO Box?

USPS says Priority Mail Express reaches most U.S. addresses and PO Boxes. FedEx says its Ground and Home Delivery shipments cannot go to PO Boxes. Shopify's Help Center says UPS labels bought in Shopify do not support PO box addresses. For a PO Box order, check the service on the carrier's page first.

Carriers bill the parcel. Does your order carry enough sale to cover it?

Sledge does not ship, label or track a parcel. It adds a Free shipping reward to your cart drawer's progress bar, so shoppers see how far the cart is from free shipping. Try it free for 14 days. Growth Intelligence turns on when you pick a paid plan, and it adds up the fixes it lists as one dollar figure, labeled Est. potential.
