Shopify vs Wix is a tie on the US price to start selling: $29 a month paid yearly, plus 2.9% + 30¢ per online card sale. Wix fits a site built around services, bookings or your work that also sells. Shopify fits a growing catalog, a design you expect to change, or in-person sales outside the US, UK and Canada.
Your first products might not sell, so you want the cheaper start. If they do sell, you don't want to rebuild the store a year from now. On November 5, 2026, we read Shopify's and Wix's price pages, fee tables and help centers.
Which one fits your kind of store?
Pick by what the site does, because the yearly price to start selling is the same on both.
| If your store | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sells products, and the catalog will grow | Shopify | No product cap, over 16,000 apps, and themes you can swap without rebuilding |
| Is a site for services, bookings, events or your work that also sells a few products | Wix | Scheduling and services come with Core, and Wix says one cart can hold a service, a ticket and a product |
| Sells products with four to six options, such as size, color, fabric and fit | Wix | 6 options a product, against Shopify's 3 |
| Takes cards through another payment provider | Wix | No added fee, where Shopify Basic adds 2% |
| Sells at a counter or market stall outside the US, UK and Canada | Shopify | Shopify Payments takes cards in person in 18 countries, Wix's own POS in 3 |
| Is based where Shopify Payments works and Wix Payments doesn't, such as Australia or Japan | Shopify | Shopify Payments runs in 41 countries and regions, Wix Payments in 15 |

What does Shopify cost compared with Wix?
In the US, Shopify Basic and Wix Core both cost $29 a month paid yearly, and each is the cheapest plan that lets a new store take payments.
| Plan | Paid yearly | Paid monthly | To start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic | $29 a month | $39 a month | Three days free, then $1 a month for three months |
| Wix Core | $29 a month | Shown at checkout | Build free; 14-day money-back guarantee |
US prices from Shopify's pricing page, archived November 4, 2026, and Wix's plans guide, read November 5, 2026.
Wix lets you build on its free plan, but payments start on Core. Light, at $17 a month in Wix's plans guide, suits a portfolio that doesn't sell. Those prices are billed yearly and paid in full up front, and Wix says they vary by location.
New stores can't choose Shopify's Starter plan, which older comparisons still list. Every Shopify plan and its card rates are on Shopify's pricing page and in our Shopify review.
What do Shopify and Wix take from each sale?
A standard US card sale costs 2.9% + 30¢ on both, so a $40 order loses $1.46 either way.
| On a $40 order | Shopify Basic | Wix |
|---|---|---|
| US card online | $1.46 | $1.46 |
| Card from abroad | $1.86 (adds 1%) | $2.06 (adds 1.5%) |
| Through another provider | That provider's fee plus $0.80 (2%) | That provider's fee only |
| In person | $1.14 (2.6% + 10¢) | $1.04 (2.6%) |
| Refund | The card fee isn't returned | The card fee isn't returned |
A hypothetical $40 order, worked out from both fee tables, read November 5, 2026.
The gap opens when you take cards through another payment provider. On Basic, Shopify adds 2% to each sale that provider takes, or $0.80 on that $40 order. On Grow it's 1%, and on Advanced 0.6%, while Wix adds nothing.
PayPal costs from 3.49% + 49¢ on both. Wix's fee table lists the rest of its US rates.
Weighing a marketplace too? Etsy vs Shopify fees works out the same kind of sale on Etsy.
Which one fits a catalog that will grow?
Shopify sets no cap on products, while Wix Stores holds up to 50,000.
Options run the other way. A Wix product takes up to 6 options, such as size or color, and a Shopify product up to 3. A shirt sold by size, color, fabric and fit is one listing on Wix and takes an app on Shopify. Combinations of those options go up to 1,000 a product on Wix and 2,048 on Shopify.
The Shopify App Store lists over 16,000 apps, and Wix's App Market lists hundreds. Each paid app is one more monthly charge, so count the app bill before you count the plan.
Wix gives you thousands of templates and a drag-and-drop editor, but a site can't switch to another template once it's built. You start a new site and copy the pages across.
Shopify keeps up to 20 themes in your store and lets you publish any of them without losing changes. A paid theme you're only trying has to be bought first. The Theme Store lists 24 free themes to start on.
Which one fits a site that also sells?
Wix puts scheduling and services in its Core plan, so a salon, studio or tutor can take bookings and sell products on one site.
Your site exists to show your work and fill your calendar, and the shop is a shelf of prints by the door. Wix says one cart can hold a service, an event ticket and a product, paid in one go. If the shelf grows into the business, moving comes later, and it costs work.
Can you sell in person and in other countries on Shopify and Wix?
Shopify Payments takes cards in person in 18 countries, and Wix's own POS takes cards in the US, the UK and Canada.
Shopify POS takes payments with a phone or a card reader on every plan. It keeps orders and stock in step with your Shopify admin. POS Pro, for a shop with staff roles and in-store stock tools, costs $89 a month per location. Wix's POS charges 2.6% per US card, and Tap to Pay on a phone 2.6% + 20¢.
Shopify Payments is open to stores based in 41 countries and regions, and Wix Payments to stores in 15. Each adds a fee when the card comes from abroad: 1% on Shopify and 1.5% on Wix in the US. Both also charge to convert a shopper's currency.
How hard is it to move from Wix to Shopify later?
Shopify's free Store Migration app imports your Wix products and customers, and the design stays behind.
You picked Wix for the design. Two years on, the catalog has outgrown it, and the move can leave photos and descriptions to fix by hand. Wix exports physical products up to 5,000 rows per file, and digital products not at all. Reviews don't come across. Our guide to migrating to Shopify covers the steps.
Shopify vs Wix vs Squarespace: which costs least to start?
Paid yearly, all three charge $29 a month for a plan that adds no fee to sales through their own payments, and 2.9% + 30¢ per US card.
| Platform and plan | Paid yearly | Paid monthly | Fee on online sales |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Basic | $29 | $39 | None on card sales with Shopify Payments, 2% with another provider |
| Wix Core | $29 | Shown at checkout | None |
| Squarespace Basic | $19 | $25 | 2% |
| Squarespace Core | $29 | $39 | None |
US prices from Shopify's and Squarespace's pricing pages, archived November 4, 2026, and Wix's plans guide, read November 5, 2026.
Squarespace also sells on a cheaper plan. On Squarespace's pricing page, Basic costs $10 less a month paid yearly and takes 2% of each online store sale, or $0.80 on a $40 order. Its POS works in the US and the UK. Our Shopify vs Squarespace comparison covers the rest.
The same three checks work on GoDaddy's builder or any other: the cheapest plan that takes payments, the fee on top of the card rate, and what you can export if you leave.
Shopify vs Wix vs WordPress: what changes with WooCommerce?
WordPress sells through WooCommerce, which is free, so you pay for hosting and add-ons instead of a plan.
WooCommerce's own pricing page puts hosting at $25 to $350 a month for most stores, and paid extensions at $29 to $299 a year each. Its WooPayments service charges 2.9% + 30¢ per US card.

Is Wix cheaper than Shopify?
Paid yearly, no. Wix Core and Shopify Basic both cost $29 a month in the US, and both charge 2.9% + 30¢ per online card sale. Wix costs less when you take cards through another provider, because Shopify Basic adds 2%. Paid monthly, Basic costs $39, and Wix shows its other billing periods at checkout.
Is Shopify or Wix better for a small business?
Wix fits you if you book clients and sell a few products, as a salon, studio or tutor does, because scheduling comes with its Core plan. Shopify fits you if you sell products and plan to add more, sell at a counter outside the US, UK or Canada, or change your design later.
Does Wix or Shopify charge transaction fees?
Not on card sales through their own payments, which cost 2.9% + 30¢ in the US on both. With another payment provider, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, and Wix adds nothing. Shopify stores opened since May 12, 2025 pay that fee on gift card and store credit payments, even with Shopify Payments.
Can I add Shopify to my Wix site?
Yes. Shopify's Buy Button channel, included in every Shopify plan, puts a product and its checkout on a site built elsewhere, Wix included. The product's photos, description and price come from your Shopify admin. You then run two accounts: Wix for the site, and a paid Shopify plan for the products and orders.
Can I switch from Wix to Shopify later?
Yes. Shopify's free Store Migration app imports the product and customer files Wix exports, and Wix exports physical products up to 5,000 rows per file. Reviews don't come across, so you add them again through a review app. Our migration guide covers the steps and how to keep your Google rankings.
