Dawn vs Horizon: which Shopify theme should you choose?

Both themes are free, built by Shopify, and sell fine out of the box. Dawn is the safe pick for an established store: mature, minimal, tutorials everywhere. What Dawn and Horizon share

The overlap is most of the picture. Both themes are free. Both come from Shopify's own design team. Both ship a native cart drawer, a related products section on the product page, and collection filters managed through Shopify's free Search & Discovery app. Both cover the basics of storefront search.

So the selling machinery is nearly identical out of the box. A shopper on Dawn and a shopper on Horizon meet the same parts: a product grid, a filter list, a search icon, a drawer. The real differences sit in three places: the editor, the age of the ecosystem, and where Shopify is pointing next.

The editor: sections versus blocks

Dawn builds pages from sections. You stack them, set their options, and the layout follows the theme's rules. Predictable, quick, hard to break. The ceiling: when you want a layout a section doesn't offer, the answer is custom code.

Horizon builds pages from blocks, and blocks nest. Columns inside groups inside sections, rearranged by drag. Layouts that Dawn sends to a developer, Horizon handles in the editor. The honest cost is decisions: more control means more choices, and a fresh Horizon page asks more of you than a fresh Dawn page does.

If you enjoy designing, Horizon's editor is the single best reason to pick it. If you want to set the store up once and get back to selling, Dawn's narrower editor is a feature, not a shortfall.

Cart drawer and related products: a tie, with the same hole

Add to cart on either theme and a drawer slides in. Both drawers do the same job: list the items, total the order, show the checkout button. Neither drawer sells. No free-shipping progress bar, no last offer, no countdown. That hole is identical on both themes, and filling it is app work. Related products land the same way. Each theme renders a recommendations section on the product page, fed by Shopify. Neither lets you set the rules, pin a product, or test one strategy against another.

Filters and search: same engine, same ceiling

Filtering on both themes is managed by Search & Discovery: availability, price, variant options, product type. The ceiling is shared too. Color filters lean on text more than swatches, and near-duplicate values like "Navy" and "navy blue" each get their own row, on either theme.

Search covers the basics on both. One difference worth knowing: Horizon's header carries separate search buttons for desktop and mobile, so anything you change about search needs checking twice. Dawn keeps a single trigger.

Tutorials, apps, and the age gap

This is the difference you feel weekly. Dawn was the default for years, so nearly every Shopify tutorial, forum answer, and video fix assumes you run it. Stuck at 11pm? Someone already wrote the answer.

Horizon is young. Fewer tutorials, fewer threads, and apps vary in how well their widgets are tuned for it. The gap closes month by month, and Shopify's attention is on Horizon now. But in June 2026, the paved road still runs through Dawn.

Choose Horizon if you are building new or redesigning anyway. The block editor gives you layout control no free theme matched before, the sibling themes give the store somewhere to grow, and new guides increasingly get written against Horizon first.
