How to improve search on the Horizon theme
Horizon ships with Shopify's predictive search: type in the header, suggestions appear as the letters land. It covers the basics. Shopify's free Search and Discovery app adds hand-built synonym groups and product boosts. Sledge adds typo tolerance, semantic matching, conversational queries, zero-result recovery, and search analytics, wired to Horizon's header automatically, both buttons handled.
A shopper types exactly what they want into your search bar, in their own words. On Horizon, Shopify's newest default theme, those words meet predictive search: dependable, and word-for-word literal. Three ways to do better: tune what is free, add Shopify's free app, or give the bar judgment with Sledge.
Option A: get the most from Horizon's predictive search
Horizon's header search works from day one, nothing to install. A shopper taps the button, types, and a panel suggests products, collections, and pages as they go. What you can do natively:
- In the theme editor, confirm Horizon's header shows its search buttons, desktop and mobile both.
- From the storefront, test five searches your shoppers would type. Note what comes back.
- Clean up product titles and types, since predictive search matches the words your catalog contains.
Step three is where the free wins live. If shoppers type "hoodie" and your titles all say "pullover", retitling the products improves search at zero cost.
Where it stops: there is no synonym control, so the shopper typing "couch" misses every product titled "sofa" unless a title carries both words. There are no conversational queries: "running shoes under $50" gets read as keywords, and no product title contains the word "under". And the analytics run thin. Top searches in Shopify's reports, and not much past that.
Option B: add synonyms with Shopify's Search and Discovery app
Search and Discovery is Shopify's own free app, and it adds the levers Option A lacks most.
- Install Search and Discovery from the Shopify App Store. Free.
- Open the search settings and build synonym groups: sofa, couch, settee.
- Add product boosts where chosen products should rank higher in results.
- Run your five test searches again from the storefront.
Credit where due: synonyms are the highest-value fix in store search, and here they cost nothing. If shoppers keep typing "couch" at your sofa store, a short session in this app plugs a real leak.
Where it stops: every synonym is hand-built, one group at a time, and the list is only as complete as your last edit. Nobody suggests the synonyms you have not thought of. Sentence searches stay literal, so "running shoes under $50" still finds nothing for "under $50". A search that matches nothing still ends at a no-results page. And reporting stays at the top-searches level: which words got typed, not what each search went on to earn.
Option C: give Horizon's search bar judgment with Sledge
Sledge ships tuned for Horizon, so the search button your shoppers already use becomes the doorway to instant search. No code, no theme file edits.
- Install Sledge from the Shopify App Store and start the 14-day free trial.
- Switch on the app embed. Sledge wires itself to Horizon's header, and it knows the theme carries two search buttons, one for desktop and one for mobile: it replaces the visible one and hides the spare, so search opens once, everywhere.
- Add synonyms by hand, or accept AI-suggested ones built from what shoppers type.
- Open search analytics and read what your shoppers ask for, in their own words.
What changes for the shopper: results appear as they type, typos get forgiven, and semantic matching means "summer jacket" finds the linen blazer whose title never says summer. Conversational queries work too: "running shoes under $50" gets read as a category and a budget, answered in one overlay. Searches that would have come back empty get zero-result recovery instead, and behind the overlay sits a real results page, not a dead end.
What changes for you: the search bar becomes a place to sell, since bundle offers can appear right inside results. And Growth Intelligence keeps watch: when shoppers keep asking for something and the query returns nothing, it flags the miss, with a fix and a dollar figure attached.
Predictive search, Search and Discovery, or Sledge?

| Price | Included | Free | From $29.99/month, 14-day free trial |

The honest read: a small catalog whose shoppers type the words on your product titles does fine on Option B, free. A deep catalog, shoppers who type sentences, or a store where search traffic is the buying traffic: that is Sledge territory.

Questions, answered
Does the Horizon theme have predictive search?
Yes. Horizon ships with Shopify's predictive search in the header: suggestions for products, collections, and pages appear as the shopper types. It covers the basics, with no synonym control and thin analytics.
How do I add synonyms to Shopify search on Horizon?
Two ways. Shopify's free Search and Discovery app takes hand-built synonym groups. Sledge takes manual synonyms and also suggests them with AI, built from what shoppers actually type into your store.
Can search on Horizon understand "running shoes under $50"?
Not natively. Predictive search reads that phrase as keywords, and no product title contains "under $50". Sledge reads it as a category and a budget, and returns exactly that.
Horizon shows two search buttons. Which one does Sledge take over?
Both, properly. Horizon's header carries separate desktop and mobile search buttons; Sledge replaces the visible one and hides the spare, so instant search opens once on every device. Uninstall, and both return exactly as they were.
Every search is a request. Answer it.
Install free. Sledge wires itself to Horizon's header on the first load, both buttons handled. And built-in Growth Intelligence starts reading your searches for the requests your store keeps missing.
