How to upgrade the Dawn theme's cart drawer

Option A: use Dawn's native cart drawer

Dawn ships with a cart drawer, and switching to it takes a minute.

1. In the theme editor, open Theme settings, Cart.
2. Set the cart type to Drawer, so adding to cart slides the cart in instead of sending shoppers to a separate page.
3. Save, then add a product from the storefront and watch the drawer open.

What you get: line items, quantities, a subtotal, and a checkout button. Fast, clean, and native. If a drawer's whole job were showing the cart, this post would end here.

Where it stops: the native drawer reports the cart without growing it. There is no free-shipping progress bar handing shoppers a goal, no countdown giving a reason to finish now, and no offers. The drawer opens at the exact moment buying intent peaks, and Dawn leaves that moment blank.

Option B: rebuild the drawer with theme code

No native Shopify feature or free Shopify app upgrades Dawn's drawer; Search and Discovery stops at search and filters. So the do-it-yourself route runs through Dawn's theme files. What people attempt:

1. Duplicate Dawn, so the work happens on a copy.
2. Edit the cart drawer's snippet, JavaScript, and CSS in the code editor.
3. Build the piece you want. A progress bar needs your free-shipping threshold, math against the cart subtotal, and styling. A countdown needs a script with an end date.
4. Test on every page type, since the drawer is global.

Credit where due: a developer who knows Dawn can build a clean progress bar this way, and it will look native because it is native.

Where it stops: the work lives in your theme copy, so updating Dawn means carrying every edit over by hand. Each new idea is another development round-trip. Want offers in the drawer? Now you are writing and maintaining discount logic too. Budget for upkeep, not just the build.

Option C: replace the drawer with Sledge
