How to add product filters to the Dawn theme
Dawn shows collection filters out of the box through Shopify's filtering system, managed by the free Search and Discovery app: availability, price, variant options, product type. That covers the basics. For color swatches, metafield filters, merged values, and per-value product counts, you add Sledge. All three routes below, with honest limits.
Dawn keeps collection pages minimal: a grid, a sort menu, and as much filtering as you switch on. That minimalism is why Dawn is fast, and why a catalog past a few dozen products starts to feel like work. A shopper hunting a size M hoodie in blue should not have to scroll for it.
Filters fix that. Three routes, each with where it stops: the theme editor alone, Shopify's free Search and Discovery app, or Sledge.
Option A: turn on Dawn's built-in filtering
Dawn already knows how to show filters. The setting just ships switched off in some store configurations.
- In Shopify admin, open Online Store, Themes and click Customize on Dawn.
- Open a collection page inside the preview.
- Select the Product grid section and check Enable filtering.
- Pick a layout: horizontal, vertical, or drawer. Save.
Your collection pages now show Shopify's standard filters: availability, price, variant options like size and color, and product type. For a small catalog with tidy product data, this is a fine place to land, and the cost is zero.
Where it stops: the theme editor decides where filters sit, not what they are. Color options render closer to a form than a palette, since swatch styling is limited. Nothing merges near-duplicate values, so "Navy", "navy blue", and "Dark Navy" each get their own row in the menu. And the filter list itself is managed elsewhere, which brings us to Option B.
Option B: manage the filters with Shopify's Search and Discovery app
Search and Discovery is Shopify's own free app, and Dawn integrates with it natively. The app decides which filters exist; Dawn displays them.
- Install Search and Discovery from the Shopify App Store. Free.
- Open the app and go to Filters.
- Add or remove filters: availability, price, variant options, product type. Rename labels so "Color" can read "Shade" if that is how your store talks.
- Reorder the list. Dawn picks up every change automatically.
An upgrade over Option A, and an honest pick if your needs end at the basics: you control which filters appear, what they are called, and their order, free, from the company that builds the platform.
Where it stops: styling and visual swatches stay limited, so a color filter still reads as words, not colors. No per-value merge controls, so the Navy problem survives the upgrade; the only fix is renaming option values on the products themselves, one by one. Filters narrow the grid, and that is the whole job.
Option C: add Sledge filters tuned for Dawn
Sledge ships with a configuration tuned for Dawn, so filters land in the right place on the first load, styled to match the theme. No code, no theme file edits.
- Install Sledge from the Shopify App Store and start the 14-day free trial.
- Switch on the Sledge app embed in the theme editor. One toggle.
- Pick your filter groups: sizes, price range, vendor, tags, metafields, and colors as real swatches. Merge stray values, so "Navy" and "navy blue" become one clean row.
- Preview a collection and publish. Sledge places the filter sidebar or flyout to match Dawn's layout automatically.
Beyond Options A and B: color and image swatches shoppers see instead of read, a price slider instead of typed numbers, filter groups built from tags, vendor, and metafields, and a live count on every value, so shoppers see "2XL (0)" before they tap. Results update without a page reload. Filters that sell, not just sort.
And because the same engine powers search, the same filters work on your search results page too.
Dawn alone, Search and Discovery, or Sledge?
| Dawn alone | Search and Discovery | Sledge | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Included | Free | From $29.99/month, 14-day free trial |
| Filter sources | Availability, price, variant options, product type | Same set, managed | Options, tags, vendor, metafields, price ranges |
| Color swatches | Limited | Limited | Real color and image swatches |
| Merge near-duplicate values | No | No | Yes |
| Setup | Theme editor toggle | App, Dawn displays it | App embed, tuned for Dawn |
The honest read: if the basic filter set covers your catalog and your product data is clean, take Option B and keep the money. The moment shoppers need swatches, metafield filters, or a tidy menu on top of messy data, that is Sledge's job.

Questions, answered
Does the Dawn theme have built-in product filters?
Yes. Dawn displays Shopify's standard collection filters: availability, price, variant options, and product type. Turn them on per collection template in the theme editor, and manage the filter list with the free Search and Discovery app.
Why are filters not showing on my Dawn collection pages?
The usual cause: Enable filtering is unchecked on the Product grid section in the theme editor. Check the box, save, reload. If the list looks thin after that, open Search and Discovery and add the missing filters there.
Can Dawn show color swatch filters?
Only in a limited way. Dawn's native filter styling leans on text and checkboxes. Sledge renders color and image swatches sized to Dawn's card style, with no theme edits.
Do Sledge filters change Dawn's theme code?
No. Sledge injects at runtime through the app embed and never edits Dawn's theme files. Uninstall, and Dawn is exactly as it was.
A filter menu that earns its column.
Install free. Sledge detects Dawn and fits the filter sidebar on the first load. And built-in Growth Intelligence starts looking for what your store is leaking, with dollar amounts attached.
