How to add a countdown timer to the Horizon theme

Option A: put the deadline in static text

Horizon can carry the message, even though it cannot count.

1. In the theme editor, pick the spot every page shows. Horizon's announcement bar at the top of the store is the usual choice.
2. Write the line: "Spring sale ends Sunday at midnight."
3. Save, and check it reads cleanly on mobile.

The honest virtues: free, immediate, everywhere. A store that runs one quiet sale a season gets mileage from a plain sentence.

Where it stops: the text never ticks, so the urgency a moving clock creates is missing. One message runs storewide, with no way to scope a deadline to the products it covers. And nothing retires it: on Wednesday the bar still reads "ends Sunday" unless someone remembers, and every stale deadline teaches shoppers your deadlines are soft.

Option B: paste countdown code into a custom liquid block

Shopify has no native countdown timer, and there is no Shopify-made app for one. The do-it-yourself route on Horizon is a custom liquid block plus a snippet, usually from a tutorial:

1. In the theme editor, add a Custom liquid block where the timer should live.
2. Paste the countdown code: markup for the digits, JavaScript counting to an end date, CSS fitted to Horizon.
3. Repeat for every placement, since each spot is its own paste.
4. After the sale, remove the block by hand.

Credit where due: for a developer, or with a trustworthy snippet, a single launch timer costs nothing but an afternoon.

Where it stops: the code lives in your theme, so Horizon updates mean carrying it over. Most snippets in circulation were written for older themes, so the styling needs hand-fitting to Horizon. The clock hits zero and keeps sitting there unless removal is coded too, and the start is unmanaged: paste too early and the timer leaks the sale. Every new sale means editing dates inside code, the chore that gets skipped in November.

Option C: run countdowns with Sledge

Sledge runs countdown timers as scheduled campaigns, tuned for Horizon, with no code.

1. Install Sledge from the Shopify App Store, start the 14-day free trial, and switch on the app embed.
2. Create a countdown: run it as a store-wide bar, or place timers on chosen product pages only.

Beyond Options A and B: the clock ticks, and the placement fits the offer. A store-wide bar follows the shopper from homepage to cart for a launch weekend; product-page timers run only where the clearance applies. There is a countdown for the cart drawer too, so the deadline stays in sight at the finish line. Styling matches Horizon out of the box, and when the sale ends, the campaign takes itself down. No stale Sunday banners on a Wednesday, no midnight take-downs.

Pair the timer with a promotion banner pointing at the sale collection, and the deadline gets a destination.

Static text, custom code, or Sledge?

The honest read: an offer announced twice a year survives as a sentence in the announcement bar. A one-off launch with a developer handy can be coded. Stores that run deadlines as a habit, seasonal sales, weekly drops, clearance windows, want timers that schedule, scope, and clean up after themselves.
