How to test your Shopify store before Black Friday

Shopify explains each check on its own page. One page lists what to set up for the season. Another shows you how to test a discount. A third covers placing a test order. Nothing walks you through your own store, offer by offer, before the traffic arrives. That part is yours.

You've built the bundle, scheduled the banner, and set the cart drawer's countdown. None of it has been seen by anyone but you. The first real test is a stranger's browser, on Black Friday morning, with traffic already climbing.

A shopkeeper checks a row of levers against a checklist by lamplight, a teal bird perched on one lever mid-pull, a single switch still marked with a question mark.

Real guidance, one page at a time

Shopify's seasonal sales page tells you what to set up, not what to check: develop a marketing plan, set up your discounts, recover abandoned checkouts, set up accelerated checkouts (the one-tap buttons like Shop Pay), hide out of stock products. Shopify puts the discount test on its own page, Combining discounts. It tells you to place a test order, or to go through your own checkout, add the codes, and stop before you pay.

When the error "Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts" appears, Shopify's fix runs four steps. Check that both discounts are set to combine. Look at the automatic discounts already running, because one of them may be applying to the same cart. Review any Shopify Scripts, the custom discount rules a developer can build into checkout. Then temporarily uninstall a discount or checkout app and see whether the problem clears. Useful once something breaks. Not a check you run beforehand.

Some third-party apps change your prices or the way checkout behaves. Shopify says an app like that might stop the discount code box from showing at all. It also says those same one-tap buttons might clash with certain apps. A clash like that usually shows up only when every promotion for the season is live at the same time, which is later than you want to find out.

Shopify's flash sales page has one instruction worth copying. Email the developers of every third-party app in your checkout, and tell them how many orders you expect and how long your sale runs.

When your admin is down or won't load, Shopify's own advice is to check Shopify Status. That page lists Admin, Checkout, Storefront, and Point of Sale separately, so you can see which part is having trouble. You can't test your way around an outage on Shopify's side. Everything in your own settings, you can.

The manual way, and why it runs out of hours

You fall back on the same handful of moves. A test order through Shopify's Test payment gateway, which you turn on in your payment settings, tells you whether the order lands, whether stock comes down, whether shipping and tax come out right, and whether the confirmation emails send. A private window shows the site as a stranger sees it. A duplicate discount code tests an offer without touching a live one. You open each discount in your Shopify admin and check its Combinations section when there's time.

None of it is wrong. It's just slow. A dozen live bundles, several banners, and a cart drawer countdown add up to more places to check by hand than a week has room for.

The test gateway costs you something first. Switching it on means switching off your card payment provider, so no shopper can pay by card while test mode runs. Shopify's other option is to place a real order through that same provider, then cancel and refund it right away. Your payment provider may still charge its fee.

See it before it's live, the way a shopper will

Every bundle and promotion on Sledge can sit in Draft, and a new bundle starts there rather than going live the moment you save it. The preview shows what you are editing on a copy of the real page, so you are looking at changes you have not saved yet. It works the same for a banner you have pointed at the cart drawer, and for a countdown still sitting in Draft.

All nine offer types preview in the place that offer actually appears. Fixed bundles, Buy X Get Y, and volume discounts preview on the product page, the collection page, the search page, and instant search. Free gift, shipping, and subscription preview on the product page, the cart page, and the cart drawer. Add-ons preview on the product page only. Build-your-own previews on the Bundle Listing Page Sledge builds for it, never the product page. The thank-you page offer previews on the confirmation page after checkout. Open each one where a shopper will meet it, not where the last one happened to be.

What still needs an order, and what can run itself

Give a banner or a countdown a start date and an end date, and it turns itself on and off. A Black Friday banner can be built in October and left alone. Bundles have the same two date fields, with one exception: build-your-own has no date fields at all, so it runs until you switch it off. That one lives in your calendar.

Neither the preview nor the schedule takes you as far as paying. There is no practice checkout inside Sledge, so the last thing you do is place a test order in Shopify. Same manual step it always was, only now it confirms work you have already checked.

The cart drawer is the predictable part. You set its countdown anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes, and it starts over on each visit. Each reward tier hands out one of three things: free shipping, a cart discount, or a free gift. One pass in a private window covers it.

One setting to decide before the season: that countdown can be set to empty the cart when it runs out. Either way, nothing in that cart is held back for that shopper. Anyone else can still buy it.

Walk through this once, while the store is still quiet

  • Every promotion or bundle still being worked on sits in Draft, not live.
  • Each banner and countdown has been previewed where it will run, cart drawer included.
  • Each offer has been previewed in the place it runs, not just the product page.
  • Banners, countdowns, and bundles are scheduled to start themselves. Build-your-own is in your calendar instead.
  • One test order has gone through, after every preview looked right.
  • Now that every offer is built, you have counted the automatic discounts, the ones your apps create included, and the total is 25 or fewer.
  • You have emailed the developers of every third-party app in your checkout with the number of orders you expect and how long your sale runs.

Questions, answered

Does Shopify's Black Friday checklist cover testing discount codes?

Not in one place. Shopify's seasonal sales page tells you what to set up: develop a marketing plan, set up your discounts, recover abandoned checkouts, set up accelerated checkouts, hide out of stock products. The discount test is on a separate page called Combining discounts. It says to place a test order, or to stop your own checkout before you pay. Both pages are real help. Neither one walks you through your own apps and storefront promotions, one at a time.

Can I preview a Shopify promotion or bundle before it goes live?

On Sledge, yes, for every offer. The preview updates as you type, so you are looking at changes you have not saved yet, laid out on a copy of the real page. Shopify's own documentation covers checking a discount once it is already running, by placing a test order or stopping at checkout before payment.

Does Sledge have a way to test checkout without a real order?

Not inside Sledge. The preview shows the offer on a copy of the real page, and it stops short of the payment step. Shopify covers that part: its Test payment gateway pretends a card went through, so you can see whether the order lands, whether stock comes down, whether shipping and tax come out right, and whether the confirmation emails send.

Can I schedule a Black Friday promotion to start automatically?

Yes. Banners and countdowns each have a start date and an end date, and they switch on by themselves when the date arrives. Bundles have the same dates, with one exception: build-your-own has no date fields, so it runs until you switch it off yourself.

What happens if an app changes how my cart or checkout works?

It can collide with Shopify's own checkout. Shopify says a third-party app that changes your prices or the way checkout behaves might stop the discount code box from showing at all, and that the express payment buttons, Shop Pay and the rest, might clash with certain apps. That's why walking the whole path from product page to payment matters more than opening the store once.

Is my store's uptime something I can test for?

Not fully. When your admin is down or won't load, Shopify's own advice is to check Shopify Status. That page lists Admin, Checkout, Storefront, and Point of Sale separately, so you can see which part is having trouble. What you can control is whether your own promotions, bundles, and cart drawer behave the way you set them up. That's the part testing covers.

How many things should I test before Black Friday?

Everything a shopper's cart will touch. Every discount and bundle, whether it runs alone or alongside another one. Every banner and countdown, in the place it will actually run. And the cart drawer's timer and its reward tiers, checked once in a private window.
