What is search relevance?

Search relevance is how well a store's search results match what the shopper meant, not just the letters they typed. A relevant search reads "running shoes" and shows running shoes first, handles a typo, understands a synonym, and puts the best match at the top. Low relevance buries the right product under loosely matched ones, and the shopper leaves.

How does search relevance work?

Say 100 shoppers a day search your store. If a search for "sneakers" only matches products with that exact word, every product labeled "trainers" stays hidden, and a third of those shoppers see weak results. Each one is a near-miss sale.

Relevance improves when search reads intent: a typo still finds the product, a synonym maps to your wording, and the closest match ranks first. Lift it and more of those 100 daily searches end on a product page instead of a back button.

On Shopify stores

On a Shopify store, the default search is literal: it matches the words on the product, so typos and synonyms slip through. Relevance climbs when search understands meaning, ranks the strongest match first, and never returns an empty page for a product you clearly stock. The search bar is the highest-intent spot in the store, so every irrelevant result is a shopper who told you what they wanted and left without it.
